Trauma, comorbid disorders and recovery: Road to resilience

 In the aftermath of traumatic and victimizing experiences, most individuals are impacted but some 75 % go onto evidence resilience, while 25% evidence PTSD, Complex PTSD and co-occurring disorders such as substance abuse,  prolonged and/or complicated grief, depression and suicidal behavior.  What distinguishes these two groups and how to provide integrative treatments will be the focus of this advanced workshop.

A  Case Conceptualization model of risk and protective factors that informs treatment decision-making will be presented for varied clinical populations including returning veterans who may experience PTSD and  traumatic brain injuries,  substance abuse clients and those with prolonged and complicated grief reactions. Specific ways to bolster resilience in six domains:  (physical, interpersonal, emotional, cognitive, behavioral and spiritual) will be demonstrated using video case presentations. How to bolster vicarious resilience in helpers will also be examined.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:  Participants will be able to:

  • Use a Case Conceptualization model that informs treatment decision making
  • Implement integrative treatment programs with clients with co-occurring disorders such as Substance abuse disorders and those experiencing traumatic bereavement and Prolonged and complicated grief disorders and Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Help clients bolster their resilience in six domains  (physical, interpersonal, emotional, cognitive, behavioral and spiritual)
  • Explain ways to bolster resilience in helpers
